Partial knee replacement replaces only the worn compartment of the knee rather than replacing the entire joint. It is an option for selected patients whose arthritis is limited mainly to one compartment.

Partial Knee Replacement
Partial knee replacement replaces one diseased compartment of the knee.

Key idea

Why it may be considered

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a condition caused by thinning and eventual loss of joint surface cartilage. In many patients with knee OA, the medial compartment is affected most severely. The other two compartments may initially have little or no arthritis, although all compartments can eventually become involved.

Partial knee replacement is aimed at replacing the worn surface of only one compartment. Since the medial compartment is most commonly involved, partial replacement is usually performed on the medial side of the knee.

Surgical details
Partial knee replacement preserves more of the natural knee than total knee replacement.
