For some patients, avoiding surgery also carries risk because severe arthritis can lead to pain, immobility, deconditioning, and loss of independence.

Potential consequences of untreated severe arthritis

Why immobility matters

Pain of arthritis causes limitation of mobility, which in turn can cause blood clots, weight gain, deconditioning, weakening of muscles, and stiffening of joints. Immobility also negatively affects the heart function. Long-term arthritis can lead to social isolation and depression. Untreated arthritis can lead to many problems. For the right patient the total joint surgery could be a lifesaver!
